Last Night When We Were Young is a pop song written by Harold Arlen (music) and EY Harburg (lyrics) and released in 1928. It developed into the jazz standard.

Arlen named Last Night When We Were Young one of his favorite songs. The song was first recorded by Lawrence Tibbett in October 1935 and was used in the film Metropolitan . Alec Wilder considered it “a very remarkable and beautiful song” that “went beyond the boundaries of popular music”.

First recordings and later cover versions

Judy Garland had Last Night When We Were Young in her stage repertoire and recorded the song twice. Musicians who covered the song from 1955 onward included Stan Kenton , Carmen McRae , The Hi-Lo's , Jimmy Raney , Peggy Lee , Art Farmer , Frank Strozier , Al Viola , Bernard Peiffer , Cal Tjader , Clifford Jordan and Margaret Whiting . The discographer Tom Lord lists a total of 140 (as of 2016) cover versions in the field of jazz , including recordings by Tony Bennett , Kenny Burrell , Charlie Byrd , Bill Charlap , Frank Sinatra ( In the Wee Small Hours 1955), Tierney Sutton , Sarah Vaughan and Phil Woods should be highlighted.
