Lathrobium is a genus of beetles from the family of the short-winged birds (Staphylinidae) within the subfamily Paederinae . It occurs in Europe with 92 species and subspecies, 37 are also native to Central Europe.
features
The beetles have an elongated and often arched body with parallel side edges. The head and pronotum are structured point-like, the pronotum is rounded at the front and has a point-free longitudinal surface. The cover wings are unevenly dotted, rarely there are narrow, lined up dotted lines on them. The last link of the jaw probe is very small, tapering to a point and curved at the end. The first tarsal link of the hind legs is not elongated, the rails ( tibia ) of the middle legs are provided with individual long hairs on the outer edge. Many of the individual species are very difficult to distinguish on the basis of external characteristics, but one can assign the males to species on the basis of their genitals.
Occurrence and way of life
The animals live on the edge of water under stones and in damp places such as under leaves and moss in forests. Lathrobium cavicola is a blind species that lives in caves.
