The latite is a volcanic outflow rock named after the central Italian region of Latium , one of its main distribution areas.

description

In Latit is the volcanic equivalent of monzonite . He is related to the Andesites . The main components are plagioclase , sanidine and pyroxene . It also contains augite , hornblende and biotite . In a fine-grained to dense base material there are insects made of plagioclase, sanidine and pyroxene. The pattern of the ground mass is trachytic to rockitic with equally large, unregulated grains.

The distinction to the andesites is made by the latite's higher potassium feldspar and biotite content. In special cases, with a fine crystalline or glassy structure, a distinction is only possible with technical analysis methods.

Varieties are absarokite (olivine latite basalt) and shoshonite ( olivine- containing augitlatite). Joseph Paxson Iddings dealt with their descriptions .

history

The rock was first scientifically described in 1898 by the American geologist Frederick Leslie Ransome , he referred to Italian deposits.

Occurrence and use

In addition to Lazio, the rock also occurs on Stromboli , in the French Massif Central ( Monts Dore ) and in Germany in the Siebengebirge ( Stenzelberg , Wolkenburg , Hirschberg ). It can be used as a building material. Numerous buildings were built with it, including the Heisterbach monastery near Bonn , which was built with Latit vom Stenzelberg and is now only in ruins . The latite deposits in the Palatinate in the vicinity of the district town of Kusel were formerly also called Kuselite .
