geography

The mountain rises as a Western Edge Mountain of the Seven Mountains on the east and north side of the Hitelbach carrying Nachtigallentals . To the north, it slopes much more gently to the valley of the Mirbesbach .

history

The Hirschberg was first mentioned in a document on March 3, 1402 as "Heirtzeberg"; the Abbey Altenberg of leased Abbey Heisterbach then among other lands ten acre farmland on the mountain. Several quarries were operated on the Hirschberg to quarry the latite produced here , but they were only in operation for a relatively short time and therefore did not affect the appearance of the mountain.

In 1872 the Beautification Association for the Siebengebirge (VVS) opened up the summit of the Hirschberg with a newly laid footpath and built a clearing there . On May 17, 1877, a nearly seven-meter-high observation tower built from field fire stones was inaugurated on the summit . The Hirschburg country villa was built on the north-western flank of the mountain in 1883/84 . In 1883, also by the VVS, a housekeeper ("Hirschberghaus") was built at the southern foot of the Hirschberg, which from the summer of 1893 was also used as a pub and later - in 1925, an annex was added - as a small hotel. The observation tower was probably rebuilt in 1902 and a lounge for hikers was added. Today it is only preserved as a ruin; the Hirschberghaus was destroyed by fire on December 6, 1972 and demolished in July 1973, after which a rest area with a log cabin was created in its place.
