The Mirbesbach at the foot of the Petersberg

The Mirbesbach (formerly also Mittelbach ) is a brook in the area of the city of Königswinter in the North Rhine-Westphalian Rhein-Sieg district , which flows into the Middle Rhine from the right . At a good five kilometers, it is the longest of the rivers running through the narrow Siebengebirge . The catchment area of the stream is given as 5.438 km².

course

The Mirbesbach rises at an altitude of about 330  m above sea level. NHN at the Lohrberg spring south of the Margarethenhöhe . In the further course it flows through the Siebengebirge in a westerly direction, taking in numerous (mainly left) tributaries. The mountains to the right of the Bachtal include the waterfall , the Froschberg , the Remscheid and the Kutzenberg , on the left it is flanked by the Heideschottberg , the Zinnhöcken and the Ofenkaul . From the upper reaches to the entrance to the Rhine Valley, the Mirbesbach accompanies the state road 331 (Königswinter – Ittenbach), where it is at an altitude of 148  m above sea level. NHN changes to the north side of the street. It then flows through the area of the Wintermühlenhof and is dammed in ponds there .

After crossing the Wintermühlenhof, the Mirbesbach enters the wide valley between Petersberg and Hirschberg and at an altitude of 80  m above sea level. NHN , at the beginning of the Petersberger Bittweg , in a smaller residential area in the Königswinterer local area. Shortly afterwards, the brook dips into the canal to cross under Bundesstrasse 42 , the railway line on the right bank of the Rhine and the old town. Without coming to the surface again, it flows into the Rhine at river kilometer 646.

geology

At the exit of the Mirbesbach valley there was an eruption center of quartz-trachytic pyroclastites that was important for the petrographic structure of the Siebengebirge .

history

The Mirbesbach operated at least three mills in its lower reaches (from west to east): the Sunday mill at the beginning of the Petersberger Bittweg, the grinding mill (field name "An der Schleifmühle") and the still existing winter mill (west of the Wintermühlenhof). The valley of the Mirbesbach was called Mühlental when the mill was in operation . At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the former mill ponds in the area of the Wintermühlenhof became part of a newly created landscape park .
