The Margarethenhöhe is a district of the city of Königswinter in the North Rhine-Westphalian Rhein-Sieg district . It belongs to the Ittenbach district .

geography

The pass-like Margarethenhöhe is located on the eastern edge of the Siebengebirge at 320  m above sea level. NHN at the highest point of Landesstraße 331 (Königswinter – Ittenbach). The center of Ittenbach (around 250  m above sea level ) is 1.5 km to the east, the city center of Königswinter in the Rhine Valley is around four kilometers to the west. Immediately to the north rises the Great Mount of Olives , at 461  m above sea level. NHN the highest elevation of the Siebengebirge, south of the Lohrberg ( 432  m above sea level). To the southeast of the Margarethenhöhe, the Ittenbacher district of Lahr joins, which is occasionally also included in it.

history

The Margarethenhöhe is named after the Margarethenkreuz , a votive cross made of trachyte that was erected in 1641 on the north side of today's Königswinter – Ittenbach road.

Margaret Cross

The development of the district is closely linked to tourism in the Siebengebirge, which began intensively in the mid to late 19th century. At that time the agriculturally used Gut Margarethenkreuzhof existed here , which initially had a restaurant and was later expanded into the Hotel Margarethenkreuz .

Sophienhof

In the 1880s, the Sophienhof was built at the northeastern foot of the Lohrberg , one of the most important hotels and excursion restaurants in the Siebengebirge at the time. Around 1900, opposite the Hotel Margarethenkreuz on the Königswinter – Ittenbach road, another traditional house was added, the Margarethenhof .

Forester's House Lohrberg

In 1907 the Beautification Association for the Siebengebirge (VVS) built the “Forsthaus Lohrberg” on the Margarethenhöhe. In 1927/28, with the expansion of the road connection between Königswinter and Ittenbach over the Margarethenhöhe to the Provincial Road, tourism continued to grow. On both sides of the street there were extensive parking lots for hikers , from which developed paths lead to the Lion Castle and the Great Mount of Olives. The Margarethenhöhe became a center and essential starting point for tourism in the Siebengebirge. After the heyday of the hotels and excursion restaurants in the post-war period, some businesses had to close since the 1980s at the latest with the decline in day tourism.

Margarethenhof

In 1984 the Friedrich Naumann Foundation , which is close to the FDP , moved into the listed Margarethenhof, where it was located until 1999. By 2009 it was converted into an office building and conference center. In 2011, the improvement association for the Siebengebirge moved from the Margarethenhof to the association's own forester's house Lohrberg, which had not been used for forestry a few years earlier and is to be supplemented by a new building in the medium term. With the Nature Park House, the VVS also maintains an exhibition about the Siebengebirge.

Margaret Cross

The Margaret Cross (2009)

The Margaret Cross from 1641 was part of the Bittweg , which led from Ittenbach to the pilgrimage chapel on the Petersberg . It was built by a married couple from Ittenbach with the help of the neighborhood. It was located directly on the northern edge of the Königswinter – Ittenbach road, which was expanded in 1927/28, until it was moved 70 m to the edge of the forest in the course of widening work in 1968–1972. After the foundation and stone were damaged due to the location, they were relocated again in April 2007. Since then, it has been located northwest of the confluence of the Ölbergringweg with the state road and is accessible via its own access road.

The cross has the shape of a sectional cross and is made of trachyte from the Drachenfels . It consists of a stepped base with an inscription and the year, a rectangular altar plate below a round-arched niche with a relief representation of St. Margaret and a dragon and a crowning stone cross from 1856. The square in front of the cross has been laid out with natural stone slabs since the last relocation .
