The Nachtigallental is a valley in the area of the city of Königswinter , which leads up from the old town into the Siebengebirge .

geography

The Nachtigallental is a Siefen (Kerbtal) that stretches from the eastern edge of Königswinter's old town in a largely south-southeast direction along the Drachenfels ( 321  m above sea  level ) on the south side and the Hirschberg ( 257  m above sea level ) on the north side to the Siebengebirge . It is traversed by the Hitelbach (also "Mennesbach"), whose length is specified as 1,369 m and its catchment area as 0.708 km² and which flows into the sewer system in the area of Königswinter. The ridge of the Drachenfels, which runs along the Nachtigallental, is also known under the name Saurenberg or Saurer Berg , which was mentioned in 1715 and comes from a field name . The Nachtigallental is one of the climbs to the Drachenfels used as an alternative to the Eselsweg .

history

The valley was originally called Mennessiefen and crossed by a narrow bush forest path to below the castle courtyard . In order to revive the tourism in Königswinter, which had declined in the middle of the 19th century, the path leading through the valley was expanded to a promenade described as "shady and romantic" by 1861 on the initiative of the mayor of the time August Mirbach and at the same time that Renamed the valley to Nachtigallental . In 1867, also financed by donations, the Oberweingartenweg was built above along the south-west side of the valley to the Drachenfels.

Buildings and sights

  • Altar table
On June 28, 1925, a forest service was held at the entrance of the Nachtigallental as the beginning of the local parade for the millennium celebration of the Rhineland , and a stone altar table was permanently erected at a fork in the road about 150 meters from the entrance to the valley, which was ultimately used as the step of the parish church of St. Remigius had served and goes back to its predecessor church from 1779.
  • Ostermann monument
In the lower Nachtigallental there is a memorial in front of a small cave for the Cologne pop singer and songwriter Willi Ostermann (1876–1936), a well-known author of folk and carnival songs mainly in Cologne dialect, who spoke among other things in a song about the Siebengebirge from 1930 Singed about the Nightingale Valley. The monument was inaugurated on July 3, 1949 by the Great Königswinter Carnival Society of 1860 and the local men's choir in the presence of around 100 other carnival associations. It consists of a natural stone with a bronze relief and was created by the Königswinter architect and sculptor Franz Josef Krings .
  • Wine cellar
In the Nachtigallental there is a cooling cellar built into the mountain by the winegrowers' association from 1867. It has a shaped arched gate towards the valley, which is supported upwards by a basket arch that was later cast . The keystone shows a painted coat of arms with a bunch of grapes and the initials WDH , on the archway there is a badly weathered inscription. Access to the cellar is ensured by a double-wing iron gate that has been open for years.
  • Hell tuff
Facade design in Höllentuff
To the west of the Nachtigallental is bordered by the great “Hell”, which is traversed by a hiking trail that begins at the fork in the road at the altar table and flows into the supply road to the Drachenfels at what is now the Hirschburg's pump house. In the past, the path was used to remove rock and cut a 20-meter-deep incision through the surrounding soft tuff, the so-called hell tuff. Due to the looseness of this rock, rockfalls regularly occur here, which leads to temporary closures of the hiking trail.
A few meters away from the altar table, a facade painting by the Bonn agency Highlightz has been located in Höllentuff on a pressure booster system for water since 2015. The dragon pictured there has become a popular photo opportunity among tourists in recent years.
