The Laubach-Kolleg is an upper-level grammar school with an integrated college as an institute of the second educational path and an attached dormitory and a secondary school branch for adults in Laubach ( Central Hesse ). It is sponsored by the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau .

history

The history of the Laubach-Kolleg goes back to the Latin school founded on May 7, 1555 , which Count Friedrich Magnus zu Solms-Laubach set up shortly after the introduction of the Reformation in Laubach.

In the 20th century, the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau first founded a secondary school, which was opened in 1946. From 1948 it became a high school, which operated under the name Paul-Gerhardt-Schule. It was joined by three alumnates (boarding school), the Paul Gerhardt alumnate (founded in 1946), the Singalumnate (founded in 1949) and the Graf Friedrich Magnus Alumnate (founded in 1951). The Singalumnen also provided the Laubacher Kantorei , in its day a choir on the level of the Dresden Kreuzchor; it was closed in 1981. Traditionally, the sports education of the Graf Friedrich Magnus Alumnate focused on basketball, mainly because its director was Theo Clausen , who was one of the first to make this sport known in Germany in the 1930s. In 1965, 1967 and 1968, the team of the German men's basketball champions - MTV Gießen  - also included graduates from the Graf Friedrich Magnus alumni, including Holger Geschwindner , the mentor of NBA star Dirk Nowitzki , with Theo Clausen learned to play basketball.

In the mid-1960s, the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau built a new building not far from the new residential building of the Graf-Friedrich-Magnus-Alumnate to set up a school for the second educational path, which was named Laubach-Kolleg. Here adults could later acquire the Abitur. At the beginning of the 1970s the Paul Gerhardt School, which had only been founded in 1946 in the tradition of the Laubach Schools since 1555 by the EKHN with the help of Count Georg Friedrich zu Solms-Laubach, Pastor Schmitt and Mayor Desch, stopped teaching one and closed their gates. The lower and middle school students then attended the comprehensive school in Laubach, while the upper school students switched to the Laubach college, which was continued as an integrated grammar school and college of the second educational path, today's Laubach college. To this day it is a school with a Christian-humanistic character; this is evident not least from the maintenance of the ancient languages Latin , Greek and Hebrew . As a special feature, students in the 2nd educational path can prepare for the Abitur together with the students in the 1st educational path. Another focus of the profile is environmental education. In 2010 the Laubach-Kolleg was recognized as an environmental school. From the beginning of the 2015/16 school year, in the introductory phase, students can set their own priorities in addition to the tried and tested educational offer in order to promote individual interests and talents and develop skills. There are four profile fields to choose from: “Social Responsibility”, “Ecology”, “Old and New Languages” and “Culture”, which comprise six study afternoons and a two-week internship. In cooperation with high-profile institutions such as surrounding universities and technical colleges, as well as public institutions and companies, interdisciplinary, above all, practice-oriented learning experiences are made possible and these are then reflected on and incorporated into their own portfolio via certificates.

In the spring of 2016, a "Realschule" for adults "was founded as a further school branch, which will begin teaching in the 2016/17 school year and focus on promoting and integrating young refugees.

Dorm

Today a dormitory belongs to the college, which provides 41 places for foreign colleagues and pupils. The building of the former Graf Friedrich Magnus Alumnate and the neighboring former school gymnasium of the Paul Gerhardt School were assigned to the Laubach College. In 2007 the school was expanded to include a modern extension in the field of natural sciences and, in the following years, was fundamentally refurbished in terms of energy.

Support association

The friends' association is called the Circle of Friends and Supporters of the Laubach-Kolleg .
