Laudelino de Oliveira Freire (born January 26, 1873 in Lagarto , Sergipe , † June 18, 1937 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian lawyer, journalist, teacher, politician, literary critic, art critic and philologist.

Life

Oliveira Freire was a professor at the Colégio Militar military academy , where he taught several subjects. He is the author of the Grande e Novíssimo Dicionário da Língua Portuguesa (1939–1944) (German: Large and new dictionary of the Portuguese language ), published posthumously in five volumes. He also wrote Um Século de Pintura: 1816–1916 (German: A Century of Painting ), which became a standard work for the study of painting in Brazil in the nineteenth century.

Honors

On November 16, 1923, Laudelino Freire became a member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras , the Brazilian Academy of Literature in Rio de Janeiro, and the third holder of Seat No. 10 in succession to Ruy Barbosa . Freire was elected the Academy's eighteenth president in 1936, but only held that position for a year.
