The Laughing Brook Wildlife Sanctuary is a 367 acres (1.5 square kilometers ) comprehensive reserve at Hampden in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . It is administered by the Massachusetts Audubon Society .
Protected area
Today's sanctuary with more than 400 plant species on the eponymous watercourse was once the residence of children's book author Thornton W. Burgess , who built his stories around the animals that lived on his doorstep. His home has been preserved to this day and was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 as Thornton W. Burgess House . There are 4 mi (6.4 km ) of hiking trails available to visitors today . Belt fishermen , red-shouldered blackbirds , hut warblers , swamp swallows , beavers , water striders and oar bugs can be observed particularly frequently .
