Launt Thompson (born February 8, 1833 in Ireland , † September 26, 1894 in Middletown , New York ) was a British - American sculptor .

Life

In 1847, Launt Thompson emigrated to the United States with his widowed mother and settled in Albany . Here he first studied medicine and also dealt with painting . Then he devoted himself to sculpture under Erastus Dow Palmer (1817-1904), in whose studio he worked for nine years. Shortly afterwards he went to New York City and opened his own studio in 1858. Between 1868 and 1869 he visited Italy and lived in Rome for a few months to study the old masters. After his return Launt Thompson married in Pennsylvania Maria Louisa Potter, daughter of the Bishop of Pennsylvania Alonzo Potter and his wife Mary Nott. From 1875 to 1887 he lived in Florence .
