Laura Nicoletta Vasilescu (born November 3, 1984 in Buzău ) is a former Romanian handball player .

Career

Laura Vasilescu played for the Romanian club Universitatea Remin Deva , with whom she was in the final of the EHF Challenge Cup in the 2003/04 season . In 2005 the back court player moved to Greece, where she played in the 1st division for Panathlitikos Sykeon , HC Athinaikos Athens , AC Ormi School Patra , Megas Alexandros Giannitsa and in Thessaloniki. In the 2007/08 season she was the most successful goalscorer in the Greek league. In the summer of 2011, she signed a contract with the German Bundesliga club SVG Celle . After Celle was relegated a year later, Vasilescu joined the first division club HSG Bad Wildungen . In January 2013 she moved to league competitor Vulkan-Ladies Koblenz / Weibern . In July 2013 Vasilescu returned to HSG Bad Wildungen, which had meanwhile been relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga . A year later she returned to the Bundesliga with Bad Wildungen. In the 2014/15 season , Vasilescu was the top scorer in the Bundesliga with 230 goals. Furthermore, she finished second in the list of goalscorers for the 2016/17 season with 189 goals. On January 30, 2019 Vasilescu suffered a serious knee injury in the game against Thuringian HC . As a result, she had to end her career.

Laura Vasilescu was a member of the Romanian youth and junior national team. For both national teams she played 3 games and scored 2 goals each.

Vasilescu became the first prominent Romanian handball player to admit her homosexuality at the age of 34.
