Laurence Edward Scriven

Laurence Edward "Skip" Scriven (born November 4, 1931 in Battle Creek , Michigan ; † August 3, 2007 ) was an American chemical engineer.

Scriven grew up in Hillsborough , California. He studied chemical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley and received his PhD from the University of Delaware in 1956 . He then worked for Shell's development department in Emeryville, California. In 1959 he became an assistant professor of chemical engineering at the University of Minnesota and in 1966 he was given a full professorship there. In 1988 he became Regent's professor of chemical engineering and materials science.

Scriven published over 400 papers and had over 100 PhD students. The focus of his research was on coating technology , where he worked closely with industry. Further research areas were the hydrodynamics of porous media and capillaries, colloid science, interface phenomena (such as the Marangoni effect ) with application to oil production.

In 1960 he received the Allan Colburn Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. In 1978 he became a member of the National Academy of Engineering , and in 1991 of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1986 he was a Gibbs Lecturer and in 1990 he received the EV Murphree Award in Industrial and Engineering Chemistry .
