Laurenz Schefer

Laurenz Schefer (* 10. October 1697 in Herisau ; † 20th May 1772 ibid ; heimatberechtigt in Teufen AR and down 1,736 from Herisau) was a Swiss entrepreneur and philanthropist from the canton of Appenzell Outer Rhodes .

Life

Laurenz Schefer was the son of Niklaus Schefer, master rope maker , and Lisabeth Früh. In 1723 he married Anna Mock, daughter of Moritz Mock, master glazier .

Schefer initially trained as a rope maker. After a long wandering he turned successfully to the textile trade . He founded the trading company L. Schefer & Companie with two nephews of his wife as partners . Schefer was one of the first Ausserrhodern to establish itself in the international textile trade. The business base was initially established during the wanderings. Its main sales areas were Alsace , Germany and Eastern Europe . From 1752 he was a councilor.
