Lavelle White (born July 3, 1929 in Amite City , Louisiana , USA ) is an African-American blues and soul singer and songwriter .

biography

Born the daughter of sharecroppers , Lavelle White began writing poetry at the age of 12, from which songwriting developed. At 15, she went to Houston , Texas , where she performed in clubs with guitarist Clarence Hollimon. Her breakthrough came when Johnny Copeland them Don Robey recommended that the owner of the record label Duke and Peacock Records . Between 1958 and 1964 she recorded 14 tracks that were released as singles on Duke Records. She wrote some of the songs herself. White also wrote Lead Me On under the pseudonym Deadric Malone , a 1960 hit for Bobby Bland .

After her record deal ended, Lavelle White toured the States. She has performed with many musicians, including Bobby Bland, Sam Cooke , Otis Redding , Junior Parker , Aretha Franklin and Jerry Butler . In 1978 she moved to Chicago , Illinois , where she performed in clubs with colleagues such as Junior Wells , Lonnie Brooks, and Buddy Guy . After eight years she returned to Houston, where she was later awarded the title of Houston's Blues Artist Of The Year. Eventually she moved to the Austin , Texas area where she continued to perform.

In 1994, around 30 years after their last singles, their first album Miss Lavelle was released ; she was now 65 years old. In 1997 the second album It Haven't Been Easy followed ; on both albums she was accompanied by her former guitarist Clarence Hollimon. Lavelle White was now performing at major music festivals, and television took an interest in her too. Her third album, Into the Mystic , was released in 2003.

Lavelle White has been nominated four times for a Blues Music Award . In 2006 she was inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame. In the same year her band received the award for Best Blues Band at the Austin Chronicle Music Awards.

She is now over 90 years old and still performs at Antone's in Austin today (Nov. 2019).
