Lazarus Bendavid

Lazarus Bendavid (born October 18, 1762 in Berlin ; † March 28, 1832 there ) was a German-Jewish mathematician, philosopher and educator.

biography

Bendavid was the son of David Lazarus and his wife Chawa, daughter of the Berlin velvet manufacturer David Hirsch. After successfully attending the Berlin Talmud School , Bendavid began to study mathematics and philosophy at the University of Halle . He later moved to the University of Göttingen . When he worked there as a private tutor, he made a. a. the acquaintance with Georg Christoph Lichtenberg .

After completing his studies, Bendavid worked as a private lecturer. As such, he went to the University of Vienna at the end of 1791 , where he taught philosophy for six years. He tried to popularize Immanuel Kant's ideas.

In 1797 he returned to Berlin. Since that time he has written for various magazines and newspapers. On the occasion of a competition, the Academy of Sciences in Berlin awarded Bendavid's work On the Origin of Our Knowledge 1801 with the first prize. From 1802 the Haude and Spenersche Zeitung hired him as a political editor.

From 1806 Bendavid was appointed director of the Jewish free school in Berlin. He held this office until 1826. The restructuring of the school this year took Bendavid as an opportunity to resign and retire.

Lazarus Bendavid died in Berlin in 1832 at the age of 69. He was buried in the Jewish cemetery at Schönhauser Allee . The grave has not been preserved.
