history
Beginnings
The Lazy Ranch Boys Barn Dance began in the 1940s. It was one of the many barn dance shows around Detroit, but quickly got the highest ratings. The name of the show was taken from the Lazy Ranch Boys , who had the idea for the show. The group consisted of Casey Clark ( fiddle ), Herb Williams ( vocals and guitar ) and "Barefoot" Brownie Reynolds (comedian). Williams also took on the role of moderator. The Lazy Ranch Boys were the show's house band.
Rise and end
The Lazy Ranch Boys Barn Dance started at nine p.m. every Saturday night and lasted for an hour. As early as the mid-1950s, the show became the most successful of its kind on the east coast and was able to engage many well-known country stars. During their tours, well-known musicians such as Moon Mullican , Jimmy Dean , Johnnie and Jack , Kitty Wells and Hawkshaw Hawkins stopped in Detroit to perform in the Hudson Local Union Hall, the auditorium where the Lazy Ranch Boys Barn Dance was held.
But not only the big stars of country music appeared on the show, because the ensemble of permanent members consisted almost exclusively of local and regional artists. Some of these musicians were Little Evelyn, the Kentucky Boys, Chuck Carroll, Mary Ann Johnson, Mary Lynn, and the West Virginia Sweethearts , a couple from Virginia who started their careers at WCHS during the Old Farm Hour .
Nowadays the Lazy Ranch Boys Barn Dance has been removed from the WXYZ program. Casey Clark died in 1999; In 1972, Clark was inducted into the Michigan Country Music Hall of Fame .
