A special feature of the licensing of WXYT is that the station transmits like clear channel stations with 50 kW, but is licensed as "Class B". The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has licensed WXYT for hybrid broadcast, analogue and HD radio .

history

The station went on air on October 10, 1925 under the callsign "WGHP". Its name was derived from its first owner, George Harrison Phelps. In 1930, during the Great Depression , WGHP was 250,000 USD sold to John Kunsky and George Trendle. The new owners changed the callsign to "WXYZ". In 1934, the station was one of the four founding stations of the Mutual Broadcasting System , which was initially set up for the exchange of program parts between the stations.

On January 1, 1948, the independent offshoot "WXYZ-FM" went on air on 101.1 MHz, but soon afterwards it broadcast the program of "WXYZ-AM" again. In the 1960s Charles Fritz took over the management and finally bought the AM station from ABC in 1984. He changed the callsign to "WXYT" and thus brought the first pure talk program to the Detroit market.

The most famous shows include the Lazy Ranch Boys Barn Dance , The Lone Ranger and The Green Hornet .
