Lonnie Barron
Lonnie Clanceal Barron (born July 1, 1931 in Forrest , Louisiana , † January 9, 1957 ) was an American country and rockabilly singer. He was shot in early 1957.
Life
Childhood and youth
Born to a farmer, Lonnie Barron moved with his parents to Richton , Mississippi . After graduating from school, he worked in the cotton fields . He then performed publicly for the first time in Mobile , Alabama . At the age of 17, he volunteered for the Air Force , where he won several talent competitions and decided to become a musician.
Career
In 1952 Barron was discharged from the Air Force. Previously, he had attracted the attention of musician Casey Clark, who gave him appearances in the Lazy Ranch Boys Barn Dance . He made regular appearances as The Mississippi Farm Boy on the WSDC radio station in Marine City , Michigan , which continued to increase his popularity. Casey Clark gave him a record deal with Sage & Sand Records . His first single was released in March 1955. In August 1956, his second single Don't Doubt My Love was number two on the Detroit country charts. He also rented the White Eagle Dance Hall in Richton , where he held so-called "Barn Dances" on Saturday evenings. With the rockabilly song Teenage Queen from 1956, he went from Farm Boy to "local Elvis" (local Elvis). His predominantly female fan base grew steadily and Barron received countless letters. One of these letters turned out to be his undoing.
A jealous husband, who learned that his wife had also sent Barron letters, went to Barron on January 9, 1957, where he first provoked an argument with Barron. The argument got out of hand, however, and the man drew a gun which he used to shoot Barron, who was only 26 years old. His last single was released posthumously in February of that year. In 1975 Barron was inducted into the Michigan Country Music Hall of Fame .
