The founding members in March 2015 include the German Die Welt from Germany , El País from Spain , La Repubblica from Italy , Le Figaro from France , Le Soir from Belgium as well as the Tages-Anzeiger and the Tribune de Genève from Switzerland . Javier Moreno , who was editor-in-chief of El Pais between 2006 and 2014 , became the first director of LENA . In April 2018, Gazeta Wyborcza from Poland joined the alliance.

One focus of the collaboration is the development and exchange of editorial content with the aim of influencing public opinion formation. The individual members can access content via a platform. The alliance aims to ensure an editorial, technological and economic lead for its members and selects suitable cooperation partners for this purpose. According to its own statement on its website in March 2019, LENA is "the largest media network in Europe".
