The Lecointe-Guyot is a remote guyot (table mountain -like deep sea mountain ) in the Southern Ocean north of the Bellingshausen Sea . Like Belgica-Guyot, 125 km southeast, it belongs to the De-Gerlache-Seamounts .
The Lecointe-Guyot is located about 290 km northeast of the Dallmann Seamount , 430 km north of Peter I Island and 760 km north of Thurston Island off the Eights coast of West Antarctica . At its base it is 90 km long in north-south direction and 60 km wide in east-west direction. Its flanks rise with an average gradient of 11 ° more than 4000 meters up to a 200 km² plateau, which is 350 to 500 m below sea level. This plateau is approximately circular with a diameter of 17 km.
The guyot was systematically examined in 1995 by the crew of the German research vessel Polarstern . It was named at the suggestion of Rick Hagen from the Alfred Wegener Institute . This was recognized in July 1997 by the US Advisory Committee for Undersea Features . It is named after Georges Lecointe (1869–1929), the captain of the Belgica on the Antarctic expedition of the same name (1897–1899) of the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery .
