Leda Hugo

Leda Florinda Hugo , also just Leda Hugo for short (born January 4, 1963 in Namapa , Nampula Province , Portuguese East Africa ) is a Mozambican agricultural scientist and politician ( FRELIMO ). Hugo has been Vice Minister in the Mozambican government since 2010: Previously in the Ministry of Education, she has been working in the Ministry of Science, Technology, Technical and Academic Education since 2015.

Life

Youth and education

Leda Florinda Hugo was born on January 4, 1963 in the small town of Namapa in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula in the Portuguese colony of Mozambique. She attended the Escola Primária Oficial de Ocua Primary School in Cabo Delgado Province until 1974 before graduating from the Escola Secundária de Nampula Secondary School in Nampula until 1979. She attended a university preparatory course at the Escola Secundária Samora Machel in Beira until 1981.

Hugo then studied agricultural sciences at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo until 1986. Hugo completed her master's degree at Texas Agriculture & Mechanics University, College Station in Texas (USA), and received her doctorate in 2003 from the University of Pretoria (South Africa).

Professional background

Until she was appointed Vice Minister in 2010, Hugo worked at Eduardo Mondlane University . From 1994 to 1997 she headed the basic course of the agricultural science faculty, from 2001 to 2006 she headed the course in rural engineering ("Engenharia Rural"). From 2006 to 2007 she headed the university department for rural engineering. In 2008 she took on the role of educational director of the university for one year.

In 2008/09 she coordinated the implementation of an academic amendment at Eduardo Mondlane University, the largest university in Mozambique.

Change to politics

After Armando Guebuza's successful re-election in the 2009 presidential elections , he redesigned his cabinet . Guebuza appointed Leda Hugo, who was already a FRELIMO member, to the cabinet and made her one of the three deputy management functions of the Ministry of Education under Zeferino de Alexandre Martins . Arlindo Chilundo and Augusto Jone Luís were also vice ministers of the department. Hugo named the quality assurance of university education as its main goal of the legislative period.

Guebuza's successor, Filipe Nyusi , kept Hugo in the cabinet . As part of the downsizing of the cabinet, she took over the post of Vice Ministry for Science, Technology, Technical and Academic Education under Jorge Penicela Nhambiu , Head of Department .

Private

Leda Hugo is divorced and has two children, and she also looks after four orphans. She is a follower of the Muslim faith. She speaks Makua , Portuguese and English.
