Lee Hae-chan (born July 10, 1952 in Cheongyang , Chungcheongnam-do Province ) is a South Korean politician .
Lee was a student at Seoul State University in the 1980s and was involved in the South Korean democracy movement during his studies and afterwards. Since his first election to the National Assembly in 1988, he has been re-elected four times - successively for the Democratic Party, the Sae-cheonnyeon-minju-dang ( 새천년 민주당 , Democratic Party of the New Millennium) and the Yeollin-uri Party ( 열린 우리당 , Yeollin-uri-dang, Our Open Party). He was Minister of Education in the government of Kim Dae-jung ( 김대중 ) from 1998 to 1999 . After the elections in April 2004, he was proposed by President Roh Moo-hyun for the office of Prime Minister and on June 30, 2004, he was introduced to the office as the successor to Goh Kun . On March 14, 2006, he had to resign because of the so-called golf game affair. He'd played golf with friends instead of addressing the problem despite a nationwide railroad strike. In June 2012 he was elected chairman of the Minju-tonghap Party ( 민주 통합 당 , Minju-tonghap-dang, United Democratic Party). On May 4, 2013, Kim Han-gil replaced him in this position.
