Lee Ze-ha or Lee Je-ha (born April 20, 1937 in Miryang , Kyŏngsangnam-do ) is a South Korean writer , poet and painter .

Life

Lee Je-ha's childhood was shaped by the experiences of the Korean War and the upbringing of his dominant father. In the Masan High School he was influenced by poets like Kim Chunsu and Kim Sang-ok , and painters like Chŏn Hyŏngnim and Kang Sinsŏk , who also taught there. He began studying sculpture at Hongik University in 1956 and entered the literary world in 1957.

With his poem Das Abendrot , he made his debut in the literary magazine Hyŏndae munhak (Modern Literature) on the recommendation of the poet Sŏ Chŏng-ju . With the award from the literary magazine "Sint'aeyang" (New Sun) for his short story The Yellow Dog , his reputation as a novelist grew. In 1961, his short story Die Hand won the Hankook Ilbo daily newspaper's prize for young writers . He earned his living as an illustrator for daily newspapers and magazines, and he published other poems and stories in various literary magazines.

In 1973 he published his first volume of stories, herbal teas, consisting of fourteen short stories . This book received the highest praise from literary critics and generated a great response from the readers. This success ensured that there was a general boom in literary publications in the 1970s. Shortly after his volume of short stories was published, the literary critic Kim Hyun wrote a review in the magazine "Hyŏndae munhak" under the title "Liberation from deviation and complex" , which gave rise to a theory about the literature of Lee Je-ha. The critic looks at the madness of the characters in Lee Je-ha's work in terms of their social significance.

The following year, 1974, the writer caused a public stir when he turned down the award of the magazine Hyŏndae munhak for his short story herbivores . The reason he gave was that the power struggles of the famous writers had disappointed him. In 1984 he published his most important story A Wanderer Doesn't Linger on the Path , for which he received the Yi Sang Literature Prize a year later . In 1987 she was made into a film by the director Lee Jang-ho (English title The Man With Three Coffins ).

In the same year his novel The mad painter appeared , for which he received the literary prize of the newspaper Hankook Ilbo and which was described by literary critic Kim Yunsik as a literary victory Lee Je-has. In 1988 he published the novel Das Mädchen Yuja , a revised version of his earlier story Die Kurzbiographie von Yuja . After the publication of the novel The Wedding in Sleet in 1990, he put a rest period in terms of his literary work.

From 1997 onwards, however, the volumes of short stories by Lee Je-ha began to be reissued after the author had revised them. With the publication of the new volume of short stories, The Poisonous Insect , which provoked numerous discussions, the presence of the writer in the literary world is once again shown. Since 1999 he has been teaching creative writing at Myongji University .

family

His daughter Yun I-hyŏng (1976) has also been a writer since 2005.
