Lee Man-hee (born October 6, 1931 in Seoul , Chōsen , today South Korea , † April 13, 1975 ) was a South Korean film director. He made 51 films and covered a wide variety of topics and genres with them.

Life

Lee Man-hee was born on October 6, 1931 in Hawangsimni-dong, Seoul, the youngest of eight children. During the Korean War, he deciphered enemy secret texts. Between 1956 and 1961 he worked as an assistant director for the directors Ahn Jong-hwa , Park Gu and Kim Myeong-je . In 1961 he made his directorial debut through Kaleidoscope ( 주마등 ) with the famous actor Kim Seung-ho . A year later, with Call 112 , he showed that he can also make commercially successful films. With the films Black Hair (1964) and The Devil's Stairway (1964) he started a new era for Korean horror films. In 1966, Late Autumn ( 만추 ) was one of his most famous films. The film is considered lost . On April 13, 1975, he died of cirrhosis of the liver while he was finishing his film A Road to Sampo .

He is the father of actress Lee Hye-yeong .
