Lee Keith Marshall (born January 21, 1979 in Islington ) is a former English football player. Marshall made 54 Premier League appearances for Leicester City and West Bromwich Albion before ending his career early due to injury.

Career

Marshall was playing in the reserves of the Isthmian League club Enfield FC when he was spotted by Dave Stringer , manager of the Norwich City reserve team, when the two teams met. After he won a trial session with the Norwich reserve team, the two clubs agreed in March 1997 on a transfer fee of £ 15,000. On November 1, 1997, Marshall first came to the Norwich professional team in the Football League First Division , but four days later on his second mission, he broke his ankle and fell out for months. The defensively versatile player experienced his breakthrough in the following season 1998/99, when he not only established himself as a regular player, but also played for the English U-21 national team against France in February 1999 . Marshall acted in the following period mainly in the defensive midfield and refused in November 2000 an extension of his contract, which expired at the end of the season. He was then put on the transfer list and finally on 21 March 2001, the last transfer day in English football before the summer break, his former U-21 national coach Peter Taylor brought him to the first division Leicester City for £ 600,000 .

He made his debut for Leicester in the Premier League just a few days later in a 2-0 defeat by Charlton Athletic , and by the end of the season he had a total of nine appearances, with a 4-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur facing eight defeats. In the 2001/02 season Marshall came after a serious injury to Gary Rowett mostly as a right full-back or as part of a three-way defense chain. From a sporting point of view, the season was extremely disappointing for Leicester: The club was relegated on all 38 match days and finished last in the table at the end of the season. Marshall still played first class the following season after moving to first division promoted West Bromwich Albion for £ 700,000 shortly after the start of the season. There he scored the first Premier League goal in club history in a 3-1 defeat against Leeds United as a substitute, but was hardly considered in the following and was only used for the reserve team from December 2002 after overcoming groin problems.

Despite the club's relegation, Marshall was not taken into account in the 2003/04 second division season under coach Gary Megson . In January 2004 he finally moved on loan to fourth division club Hull City , where he played again under coach Peter Taylor. Marshall made eleven appearances for Hull before breaking his right foot on April 11, 2004 in a game against Kidderminster. He did not manage to fully recover in the following 12 months, so he retired from his career in April 2005 at the age of 26.
