Leela James (born June 26, 1983 in Los Angeles ) is an American soul singer.

life and career

James came to music through her father. He liked listening to gospel , blues and funk , including songs by BB King , Marvin Gaye and Al Green . James joined the local gospel church choir. She made her first public appearance at the age of eleven. Her next performance was at a performance of " The Wizard of Oz ". There she sang a song off-screen. One of her teachers heard James sing and hired her as a background singer for his band.

James was actually primarily interested in sport, but a knee injury ended her aspiring career as a runner.

After being in the three-piece band for two years, she set out for a solo career. In the late 1990s she began working on her debut album.

In 2005 Leela James' debut album A Change Is Gonna Come was released . Well-known musicians such as Wyclef Jean , Raphael Saadiq and Kanye West helped the singer with the recording of the album, which contains elements of soul , R'n'B , gospel and blues . She calls her style Back Porch Soul . Her voice and music are compared to that of Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan .
