Legnotus picipes is a bug from the family of earth bugs (Cydnidae).

features

The bugs are 3.2 to 4.3 millimeters long. They are black in color and have a pale side edge on the corium of the hemielytras . This only extends to about half of the hemielytres. The species is similar to Legnotus limbosus , but in which the pale edge of the corium is longer and almost extends to the membranes of the hemielytras. In addition, the frontal wedge ( tylus ) in Legnotus picipes is as long as the cheeks that border it; in Legnotus limbosus , it is significantly shorter.

distribution and habitat

The species is widespread in the Palearctic and occurs from western North Africa across Europe east to the Caucasus and Siberia . It is absent in the eastern Mediterranean . In Central Europe, the species is widespread and somewhat rarer than Legnotus limbosus . Unlike this species, Legnotus picipes is not as tolerant of moisture and the preference for sandy soils is not as pronounced. However, they can also be found in significantly drier and sandy habitats. In England it is often found on coastal dunes and on the edge of heaths . In England the species is rare and occurs predominantly in the south and east. There is only one single record from Wales .

Way of life

The animals have a similar way of life as Legnotus limbosus and live on bed herbs ( Galium ). At labiates (Lamiaceae), on which one in particular, the adults of Legnotus limbosus place, they are not yet proven.
