In 2011, Martin Heuwold came up with the idea of redesigning one of the bridges on the Wuppertal Northern Railway, which was closed in 1991 . After exploratory talks with the city of Wuppertal and the Wuppertal movement , which had laid a cycle and footpath along the route of the railway line, the bridge over Schwesterstraße was selected, which connects the two districts of Elberfeld ( Ostersbaum residential area ) and Barmen ( Clausen residential area ). Heuwold received the suggestion to paint the bridge in the form of Lego bricks from his wife Ninon Becker. The Danish manufacturer Lego A / S gave its approval for the project in advance. The design was developed using a model made from real Lego bricks.

The painting of the bridge, supervised by the Wuppertal Movement, took 13 days and was completed on September 15, 2011. An area of more than 250 square meters was to be painted. Heuwold was supported by employees of the Wuppertaler Wichernhaus gGmbH employed in the second labor market . The project was financed by the Wuppertal movement and the sponsors akzenta and Klauser shoes . The bridge was inaugurated on October 7, 2011.
