Clay gate
The clay gate ( Estonian Viru värava ) is a city gate of the Reval city fortifications in the Estonian capital Tallinn (Reval).
location
It is located in the eastern part of the clay street (Estonian Viru tänav ) on the east side of the old town of Reval. Immediately to the west of the clay gate, the old clay road ( Vana-Viru tänav ) flows from the north and the Wall road ( Valli tänav ) from the south onto the clay road.
Architecture and history
It was first mentioned as a clay gate from 1362. The name goes back to the clay pits in this area in front of the city wall at that time . In 1454 the gate system was given a front gate . There was a fortified watermill between the main and the front gate , which was used until the 19th century. After the gate lost its military function, the five-story main tower was demolished in 1843. In 1888 the actual gate was demolished. The side towers of the front gate, designed as round towers, have been preserved.
