The Hellemann Tower ( Estonian Hellemani torn ) is a defense tower of the Reval city fortifications in the Estonian capital Tallinn (Reval).

location

It is located on the eastern side of the old town of Reval. On the city side, west of the tower, the Wall Street (Estonian Müürivahe tänav ) runs, to the east the New Street ( Uus tänav ). Access to the tower is from the address Mauerstraße 48.

Architecture and history

The three-storey semicircular tower goes back to the 15th century. It was also used as a prison and arsenal. As with other towers of the Reval city fortifications, the name is likely to go back to a councilor Hellemann who kept the keys of the tower. At the beginning of the 20th century the tower no longer had a roof, but it was put back on later. From the tower to be visited there is access to an approximately 200 meter long section of the Reval city wall, the so-called Kanne wall . It is possible to go to the neighboring tower behind the monastery , which houses a gallery.
