The Leibnitzbach is a brook in the communities of Ainet and St. Johann im Walde ( Lienz district ). It rises in the Schobergruppe and flows south of Unterleibnig into the Isel .
Origin of name
The field name Leibnitz occurs frequently in the area, among other things it refers to the former Gwabler Gemeindealpe in the rear part of the Leibnitz valley, at the exit of which the two villages of Unterleibnig and Oberleibnig are located. Starting from the valley floor, the name, which was Germanized before the New High German diphthongization, spread up the valley and was transferred to various fields (mountains, alpine pastures, streams, forests, etc.). Leibnitz is derived from the Slavic name for the "linden tree" ( lipa ). In its original form, the designation of the field name was probably Lip ɓnica , whereby the suffix (ɓn) ica was often used in the sense of a dimension. The suffix denotes small tributaries that flow into larger bodies of water.
course
The Leibnitzbach rises west of Törlkopf and Leibnitzkopf and initially flows in a south-westerly direction past the Hochschoberhütte . As a result, he takes up a stream on the left side that drains the Gartelsee and the Barrenlesee. After the union of the two source brooks, the Leibnitzbach flows through the alpine meadows of the Leibnitzalm and subsequently wooded slopes and gorges.
In the lower reaches of the stream passes the Oberfercher farm and the village of Oberleibnig before it flows into a small lake south of Unterleibnig and then into the Isel on the left.
The upper course of the Leibnitzbach belongs to the municipality of Ainet, in the middle course the brook forms the border between Ainet and St. Johann im Walde, while the lower course belongs solely to the municipality of St. Johann.
The TIWAG operates an on Leibnitz Bach small hydroelectric power plant .
