The Leibniz Institute for Analytical Sciences ( ISAS ) is a non-university research facility based in Dortmund and with a facility in Berlin-Adlershof . His research activities can be assigned to application-oriented basic research in the field of natural sciences in the fields of biochemistry , chemistry , medicine and physics . The institute is a member of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Community (Leibniz Association).

history

In 1952 the “Society for the Promotion of Spectrochemistry and Applied Spectroscopy e. V. ”and as the sponsor of the“ Institute for Spectrochemistry and Applied Spectroscopy ”(ISAS) in Dortmund. According to the statutes, the original purpose of the institute was to operate “modern analytical chemistry with physical , primarily spectroscopic methods ”. From its inception until 1975, ISAS was headed by Heinrich Kaiser .

In 1980 the ISAS was included in the so-called Blue List and thus in the joint federal-state financing. Since 2009, the ISAS has been called the Leibniz Institute for Analytical Sciences - ISAS - e. V.

The ISAS was last evaluated by the Leibniz Association in 2018. In the statement of the Senate of the Leibniz Association of July 11, 2018, the ISAS was certified as having “overall very convincing scientific achievements” as well as a well thought-out strategy and ambitious goals. In addition, the ISAS is “characterized by a high degree of interdisciplinarity and has an impressive range of the most modern methods in the field of materials and bioanalysis”. The Senate also recognizes the institute's commitment to technology transfer and the translation of new results into clinical application. He therefore recommended that the federal and state governments continue to support ISAS because of its successful research.

The current chairman of the board of ISAS is the Bochum university professor and biochemist Albert Sickmann, who has been with ISAS since 2008.

tasks

The further development of analytical technologies, of chemical and physical measuring processes, is a prerequisite and driver for scientific progress. Innovative measurement technology and optimized methods, suitable model systems for investigation as well as modeling and simulation processes allow ISAS to gain new knowledge about the structure, structure and dynamics of biological systems and materials. In addition, the validation of new technologies is essential in order to measure processes, molecular structures and components in real samples and to bring the technologies to application maturity.

Against this background, ISAS has set itself the ambitious goal of developing new and improved analytical procedures, methods and devices for precision medicine tailored to human needs.

The ISAS is divided into the following program areas:

  • Disease Mechanisms and Targets
  • Biomarkers
  • Bio-interfaces
  • Imaging

The ISAS is characterized by a high degree of interdisciplinarity and a work program geared towards translation. The scientific work of ISAS is currently structured in the three departments Interface Analysis, Bioanalytics and Biomedical Research with a total of ten research groups.

Cooperations

Important cooperation partners of ISAS are the Technical University of Dortmund , the Ruhr University of Bochum , the Technical University of Berlin and the University of Duisburg-Essen . With this, the ISAS gains its scientific management staff from all three universities of the University Alliance Ruhr and the Technical University of Berlin.

financing

According to the financing model of the so-called Blue List institutions, half of the institute is financed from funds from the federal government and the federal states in the form of deficit financing. The federal portion is borne by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research , three quarters of the state portion by the home states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Berlin. The remaining quarter of the country share is divided among all countries according to the Königstein key . Overall, ISAS has a budget of around 18 million euros in the 2017 budget year, including third-party funding.
