The catchweed clove owl ( Hadena perplexa ) or catchfly capsule owl is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).
features
butterfly
The wingspan of the moth is 24 to 34 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings varies from gray-brown to black-brown. However, very light colored specimens can also occur regionally. Geographical influences are partly responsible for the color design. Ring and kidney defects have a whitish border and do not touch. Characteristic are black arrow spots that point inwards from the white wavy line. The midfield is slightly darkened. The hind wings are solid gray-brown.
Caterpillar
Adult caterpillars are gray-brown in color and show a whitish back line and light brown side stripes.
Similar species
- The light carnation owl ( Hadena bicruris ) is distinguished by a blackish spot that extends prominently on the inner edge of the forewings below the blemishes. In addition, the black arrow spots on the wavy line are indistinct or absent. Often, ring and kidney defects also approach each other in the lower part. Finally, the moths are usually larger than those of perplexa .

Geographical distribution and habitat
The distribution area extends from North Africa through all of Europe to Siberia . The species is only absent in the north of Scotland and Fennoscandinavia . It also occurs in the Middle East . Preferred habitat are warm slopes, dry forest edges and overgrown orchards, gardens and vineyards. In the Alps, it rises to around 2000 meters.
Way of life
The moths are mostly diurnal, like to suckle on flowers and only occasionally visit artificial light sources . The main flight time is from May to August. Sometimes an incomplete second generation forms in late summer. The caterpillars feed mainly on the flowers and seed pods of nodding catchfly ( Silene nutans ) as well as pigeon goiter ( Silene vulgaris ), soapwort ( Saponaria ) and other carnation plants. The species overwinters as a pupa .
Danger
The bird's eye-catching owl occurs in different frequencies in Germany and is classified as not endangered on the Red List of Endangered Species , but on the warning list in Baden-Württemberg .
