Leipzig-Meuselwitz railway company
The Leipzig-Meuselwitzer Eisenbahngesellschaft was a railway company in Saxony . The company's only railway line was the Gaschwitz – Meuselwitz connection, completed in 1874 . The company was based in Leipzig .
history
In 1872 the cities of Zwenkau , Groitzsch , Lucka and Meuselwitz founded the Leipzig-Meuselwitzer Railway Company to build a railway from Gaschwitz through the southern Leipzig area to Meuselwitz. On April 19, 1872, the company was granted the concession to build the route. The 27.83 km long route was opened on September 27, 1874.
The main purpose of the railway construction was to transport brown coal from the mines between Meuselwitz and Zwenkau to Leipzig. The rest of the freight traffic and passenger transport were of minor importance. The Royal Saxon State Railways carried out the operation on behalf of the company.
On January 1, 1886, the Leipzig-Meuselwitzer railway company was bought by the Saxon state. The track and vehicles became the property of the Kgl. Saxon. State railways over.
