Johanns Lencker the Elder Ä. (also Hans Leucker; * 1523 ; † November 28, 1585 in Nuremberg ) was a goldsmith and graphic artist . Together with Wenzel Jamnitzer and Lorenz Stöer, he is one of the three Nuremberg masters who deal with perspective representation.

Life

Johannes Lencker was a master craftsman from 1550 and a year later a citizen of Nuremberg . In 1557 he designed the Perspectiva literaria , a series of 12 copper engravings with perspective representations of the letters and 9 further engravings with "mathematical" objects, which were made in 1567 by the Nuremberg stone cutter and goldsmith Mathias Zündt. In 1572 he went to Elector Christian at the Saxon court, where he stayed until 1576. In between, he also carried out work for the courts of Bavaria and Hesse in 1574. A prayer book of Emperor Maximilian is decorated with silver work by Johannes Lencker. The book is now in the Bavarian State Library in Munich . In 1575 Lencker became a city councilor in Nuremberg, where he died on November 28, 1585.

In the literature, some members of the Lencker family are mentioned as goldsmiths at the end of the 16th century. Johannes Lencker's son of the same name (1573–1637) became a well-known goldsmith. The older brother of Johannes d. J., Christoph Lencker (1556–1613), was enrolled in the Augsburg guild in 1575. He is considered one of the most important German goldsmiths of the late 16th century. Christoph's son Zacharias (died 1612) also became a well-known goldsmith. Elias Lencker (died 1591), brother of Johannes Lencker the Elder. Ä., Was also an important goldsmith who often worked with enamel.
