Life

Leo Deck was born in Bern in 1908. There he initially completed an apprenticeship as a font painter. In 1935 he traveled to Paris, where he received artistic training at the Grande Chaumière . From 1938 he spent numerous other study visits in Paris and Italy. In 1942 and 1944, Deck was awarded federal art grants. Leo Deck's work primarily comprises landscape painting in the tradition of Ferdinand Hodler and Cuno Amiet . Lake regions play a central role in this. Leo Deck found a large number of motifs in the Wohlensee , Murtensee , Neuenburgersee , Thunersee and Brienzersee areas . At the end of the 1950s, Deck made a stylistic change. The complex compositions and the calligraphic style of the early work gave way to a flat conception of forms and an increasingly expressive color scheme. This change can also be observed in his still lifes, which are mainly about flora. The figurative work addresses and idealizes strolling along the Seine in Paris, the world of the circus, equestrian sports in the pristine landscape and rowing and sailing on calm waters (cf. Rüdlinger, Arnold (1945): Junge Berner Künstler. Kunsthalle Bern) .
