Leonardus Antonius Christoffel Jacobus (Leo) Lucassen (born July 25, 1959 in Meijel ) is a Dutch historian .

Life

Lucassen studied social and economic history at the University of Leiden . In 1990 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the history of the Sinti and Roma in the Netherlands. Between 1991 and 1996 he worked as a lecturer at the Historical Institute of Leiden University. From 1998 to 2002 he was employed at the University of Amsterdam , 2002–2003 at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Science (NIAS) in Wassenaar .

In 2005 he shared a professorship for social history with Wim Willems at the University of Leiden, where he was professor for social and economic history from 2007 to 2014; since then he has held the chair for global labor and migration history there. Since September 2014 he has been director of the International Institute for Social History in Amsterdam .

In 2019 he was accepted as a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences .
