Leo Marsicanus

Leo Marsicanus (ie. "Leo from Marsica "), Leo Ostiensis (ie. "Leo from Ostia ") or Leone dei Conti di Marsi (* 1046 in Marsica; † May 22, 1115 in Ostia ), was a nobleman and cardinal . He entered Monte Cassino in 1060/3 , where he worked as a librarian and historian.

In Monte Cassino he came into contact with Desiderius of Benevento , later Pope Viktor III, to whom he also dedicated his most important work as a historian, the Chronicon monasterii Casinensis . The chronicle is largely based on the older work of Amatus but also on oral tradition and archive material. Leo finished his work in 1075. Petrus Diaconus continued the chronicle. The chronicle reports on the history of the monastery and provides information on the history of Italy, the emperors and popes.

Pope Urban II made Leo cardinal deacon of Santi Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia in 1088 . Between 1102 and 1107 Pope Paschal II appointed him Cardinal Bishop of Ostia and Velletri , an office which he held until his death. In 1111 he initially participated in the resistance of the cardinals against Paschal II.
