career

With the "Violets" of FC Bamberg, the versatile attacking player gained experience in the 2nd League South and, after relegation in 1959/60, reached the runner-up in the Bavarian League North in the 1960/61 season. The personal highlight was his appointment to the amateur national team on June 1, 1961 in Oberhausen during the international match against the Netherlands. The amateur team of the DFB, supervised by DFB coach Helmut Schön , prevailed with 5: 3 goals and substitute Rost - for Harry Behre - contributed one goal. In the attack, the team was occupied by Hans-Jürgen Himmelmann , Heinz Höher (captain; one goal), club colleague Dieter Zettelmaier (one goal), Behre / Rost and on the left wing, in the World Cup system at that time , with Gerhard Neuser (two goals) .

For the 1961/62 season he signed a contract with the reigning German champions , 1. FC Nuremberg, and thus moved to the top division at the time, the Oberliga Süd. He made his debut in the league under coach Herbert Widmayer on the seventh game day, September 17, 1961, in a 5-0 home win against VfB Stuttgart. He played on the half-left at the side of fellow attackers Gustav Flachenecker , Max Morlock , Tasso Wild and Kurt Haseneder and the newcomer scored a goal. When the defending champion in the south beat Karlsruher SC 3-0 on October 1, Rost scored his second goal for Nuremberg alongside center forward Heinz Strehl . The Bamberg player played his eighth and last league game for the "Club" on March 25, 1962 in a 2-1 home win against FSV Frankfurt. This ended his higher-class career.

In later years he was still very successful in the "FC Altligamannschaft" of FC Bamberg. The stakes in the international indoor soccer tournament in the Graf-Stauffenberg-Halle were outstanding.
