Leo Steck
Leo Steck (born February 1, 1883 in Davos ; † November 12, 1960 in Bern ) was a Swiss painter , glass painter and writer . After his conversion to the Catholic faith (1926) he mainly painted religious motifs. They - around 125 stained glass windows in churches in the city and region of Bern - are strict compositions with pronounced symbols of color and shape that reflect deep religious feelings.
Life
From 1903 on, Steck studied natural sciences at the universities of Bern , Neuchâtel and Montpellier ; he received his doctorate in Bern in 1907. He began painting as an autodidact and moved to Paris in 1908 , where he took courses at the Académie Julian .
He traveled to France , Spain and from 1911 to 1913 to Russia . He works as a travel reporter. In 1914 he returned to Paris and, when the war broke out, to Bern. From 1920 to 1930 he lived in Paris, where he became friends with the French painter and sculptor Henri Charlier . From 1930 he worked again in Bern and was a teacher at the trade school from 1935 to 1947. From 1930 to 1933 he was President of the Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors and Architects.
