Leofdag

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leofdag (also Liafdag , etc.) was the first bishop of the Danish diocese of Ribe in 948. He was venerated as a regional saint.

Life

The name suggests a Frisian or southern Jutland origin. Leofdag was possibly a monk in Fulda .

In 948 Leofdag was ordained bishop by Archbishop Adaldag of Hamburg . In June of the same year he was a participant in the universal synod in Ingelheim .

According to Adam von Bremen , Leofdag is said to have preached in Sweden and Norway and worked miracles there. This probably happened before his episcopal ordination. In Ribe, as the Cronica ecclesiae Ripensis reports, he was attacked with weapons at an unknown time not long after his installation, whereupon he fled. At the nearby Ribe Å , where he used to baptize, Leofdag was overtaken by the pursuers and killed with a lance. He was buried in the cemetery of the Church of St. Maria in Ribe, whereupon numerous miracles happened to the sick at his grave. A wooden chapel was then built over it. In the 12th century, the then Ripener Bishop Ralph tried to enforce Leofdag's canonization , but this failed because the relics were destroyed with the church in a fire in 1176. In Scandinavia, however, Leofdag was venerated as a saint until the Reformation.
