Bernhard Schmeidler

Bernhard Schmeidler (born August 6, 1879 in Berlin , † May 28, 1959 in Munich ) was a German historian and diplomat .

Bernhard Schmeidler studied history in Berlin and Freiburg and was a student of Paul Scheffer-Boichorst . Schmeidler received his doctorate in 1902 under Michael Tangl and worked from 1904 to 1920 at the Monumenta Germaniae Historica . In 1909 his habilitation took place in Leipzig with the work Italian historians in the 12th and 13th centuries . From 1909 to 1916 he taught as a private lecturer and from 1916 to 1921 as an adjunct professor for Middle and Modern History at the University of Leipzig . From 1921 he taught as an associate professor and from 1926 as a full professor until his retirement in 1936 in Erlangen . Schmeidler was prematurely retired because of criticism of a Hitler speech during a lecture. From 1954 to 1959 he was a corresponding member of Monumenta.

Bernhard Schmeidler wrote the Monumenta editions of Helmold's Slavenchronik (1909, with a new introduction and registers 1937), Adam's Hamburg Church History (1917) and the Annals of Tholomeus von Lucca (1930). He also published studies on the history of the Tegernsee monastery from the 11th to the 16th century and his Franconian document studies. In Wattenbach - Holtzmann Germany's historical sources in the Middle Ages , he dealt with the historical sources of Saxony and Thuringia in the age of the investiture dispute . In his work, The later Middle Ages , he summarized his knowledge of European history, but also of intellectual, art and economic history.

His son Felix Schmeidler was a well-known astronomer .
