Felix Schmeidler

Felix Schmeidler (born October 20, 1920 in Leipzig , † October 29, 2008 in Munich ) was a German astronomer .

Life

When his father Bernhard Schmeidler was called to Erlangen, Felix Schmeidler grew up there. He belonged to an evangelical reformed community. After his father retired, the family moved to Munich in 1936. Felix Schmeidler attended the Max-Gymnasium there until he graduated from high school in 1938. Because of a lung tuberculosis that later healed, he did not have to do military service, but began studying astronomy , mathematics , physics and meteorology at the Ludwig Maximilian University . He received his doctorate in 1941 and then worked as an auxiliary computer and assistant at the Munich-Bogenhausen observatory . In 1950 he completed his habilitation with a paper on a dynamic theory of the solar atmosphere.

Schmeidler gave guest lectures in Cambridge, completed a two-year research stay in Australia and carried out astronomical expeditions to the Sahara , Italy and Canada . In 1958 he was appointed adjunct professor.

After his retirement he devoted himself to the history of astronomy. He worked for the Copernicus Research Center at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich at the chair for the history of natural sciences. He was very committed to the interests of amateur astronomers.

The founder of the East and West Prussia Foundation in Bavaria, Heinz Radke , was able to win over Schmeidler to work in the foundation. He was a member of the board of trustees from the founding of the foundation in 1971 until his death . This foundation initiated in 1981 the establishment of the Old Prussian Association for Science, Literature and Art , the tradition of 1924 to 1945 in Königsberg acting Konigsberg Learned Society continued. Schmeidler became its 1st chairman and remained so until the end of his life. At the initiative of Nikolaus Lobkowitz founded in 1982, the working group for East and West Prussian regional studies at the University of Munich, Schmeidler acted as secretary and second chairman. 1989 the Free State of Bavaria, the sponsor was to promote Sudeten as well as ethnic group for East Prussia had taken over, the Institute of East and West Prussian Cultural Studies established. Under the founding chairman, Gerhard Grimm , Schmeidler took over the office of 2nd chairman and in 1998 moved up as Grimm's successor.

He was married to Marion Pampe and has a daughter and a son, both of whom work in computer science and mathematics.
