Gerhard Grimm (historian)

Gerhard Grimm (born October 14, 1929 in Karlsruhe , † February 17, 2007 in Munich ) was a German historian .

Life

Grimm was born in 1929 as the son of a general manager. From 1949 he first studied history , English , German , journalism and ethnology in Heidelberg . Later he moved to Berlin and finally to Munich , where he deepened the subjects of Eastern European history with Georg Stadtmüller , Byzantine studies and geography . At the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) he received his doctorate in 1959 on the Albania researcher Johann Georg von Hahn . In 1965 he completed his habilitation in Munich, where he was given a lectureship and was finally appointed professor . As early as the 1960s he began to build up the library of the seminar (later the institute) for the history of Eastern Europe and Southeastern Europe at the LMU. In addition to the history of Southeast Europe in general, he had a focus on Greek history . But he also published essays on contemporary history . He worked on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Southeast European Society and as head of the Institute for East and West Prussian Regional Studies . In 1995 he retired, but remained connected to the university institute, whose library he continued to look after. As a result of an accident, the passionate cyclist died at the age of 77 in Munich.
