The Ribe Å ( German Ribe Au ) is a 17 to 20 kilometer long watercourse in the Danish South Jutland , which begins at the confluence of the rivers Fladså , Gram Å and Gels Å , runs through Ribe and flows west of the town in the Danish Wadden Sea behind a chamber lock.
In addition, Ribe Å stands for a widely ramified floodplain system with a catchment area of 925 to 977 km², in which the longest run is 67 km long, making it one of the longest rivers in Denmark . Locals differentiate between Ribe Vesterå and Ribe Østerå , depending on the location of the floodplain to the west or east of the city.
Ribe Østerå
Ribe Østerå , which runs between river islands , swamps and meadows, is characterized by lush vegetation in which cane grass and reeds thrive. This is demonstrated by the approximately 91 hectare nature reserve Ribe Å Vildtreservat , a swampy area that is located south and south-east of Ribe and has been placed under protection in particular because of its numerous occurrences of water birds . Due to an old damming of the Au, an inland delta was formed there and the local Auental was filled with sediments over time . In an attempt to save the stock of salmon and North Sea beaks, the natural floodplain system is being restored.
Ribe Vesterå
The lower, western course, the Ribe Vesterå , runs through flat marshland . The section was canalized from 1855 to 1856, so that the Au is navigable there for motor and sailing boats. Canoe tours, however, are possible all year round in the entire course of the floodplain. A sea dike with a chamber lock was built near the mouth from 1911 to 1915, because the entire Auental valley was repeatedly flooded by storm surges before the dike was built.
