Leonard Pappus von Tratzberg (born January 27, 1607 in Feldkirch , † June 6, 1677 in Constance ) was a clergyman and historian.

Life

Leonard Pappus was a son of the imperial captain Othmar Pappus and a brother of Johann Andreas Pappus. Kaspar Scioppius was one of his teachers ; He is said to have received his training in Dillingen and Perugia . Probably intended for the clergy from the outset, he received a canonical in Constance in 1628 and the provost office of the collegiate monastery in Constance in 1629.

He became a “doctor of law, experienced in all branches of science and a knowledge of six languages.” According to Placidus Braun , he owed his career as ambassador and - from 1633 - as imperial councilor to a particular cleverness and eloquence. Leonard Pappus von Tratzberg became canon in the monasteries of Konstanz and Augsburg and held the deanery in Augsburg for one year and in Konstanz for 32 years. In his will he stipulated that 60,000 guilders from his assets should be used for various foundations.

Elector Maximilian of Bavaria made Pappus vicar general in his business armada in 1639, and Archduchess Claudia appointed him shortly afterwards as her resident at the imperial court. 1646 made him Ferdinand III. as a resident at the papal court.

But more interesting for posterity was his historical work on Germany from 1617 to 1641, which shows stylistic affinities with works by Tacitus . It is controversial whether the volume up to 1648 was written by Leonard Pappus von Tratzberg. Ludwig Arndt published the work in Vienna in 1856 and 1858 under the title Epitome Rerum Germanicarum from anno MDCXVII ad annum MDCXLVIII . “This little writing outweighs many folios in terms of internal content; With its well-established credibility it is to be seen as a source of the Austrian Catholic point of view and one of the most successful historical works of art in ancient style that Germany produced in the seventeenth century, ”said Ludwig Wachler about the book.
