Leonard Plukenet (January 1642 - July 6, 1706 in Westminster ) was an English botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Pluk. "

Life

Leonard Plukenet was hired by Queen Maria II to document and maintain her vastly increased collection of exotic plants that was in the gardens of Hampton Court Castle . She later appointed him royal professor of botany .

He supported John Ray in the design of the second volume of his work Historia Plantarum , which appeared in London in 1688. In his four-part work Phytographia he described many new and rare plants. A number of the more than 2,700 illustrations are by John Banister . Until his death in 1706 Plukenet wore a about 8000 species comprehensive Herbarium together. First the Bishop of Norwich acquired it . The herbarium later went to Hans Sloane , who added it to his extensive collection. Today the 23 volumes are part of the Sloane Herbarium of the Natural History Museum in London .

In 1699 he became a corresponding member of the Académie royale des sciences .

Honor taxon

Charles Plumier named the genus Plukenetia of the plant family of milkweed plants (Euphorbiaceae) in his honor . Carl von Linné later took over this name.
