Many of Gey's works are now in the Kupferstichkabinett in Dresden; a print by August Gaber based on Gey's “Judgment of Solomon” from the 1860s is in the possession of the British Museum.

Gey specialized in history painting and created a number of murals. From 1860 to 1863 he painted several rooms in Marienburg Castle in Schulenburg near Pattensen . Around 1877 he created the mural “Elector August and Electress Anna among the people in front of the city of Meissen ” in the Meissen Albrechtsburg with wax paints . It showed the reading of the Peace Work on the stairs of the town hall to the cheering of a crowd, over which white doves circled. The painting was destroyed in World War II. During the Night of History in 2008 the painting was recreated as a living image by 73 people in Osnabrück.
