Leonhard Merz

Leonhard Merz (also Lienhard Merz ) (* before 1450 in St. Gallen ; † 1507 ibid) was a mayor of St. Gallen ( Switzerland ).

Life

Leonhard Merz was born as the son of Leonhard Merz of the same name, member of the weavers' guild , town clerk and councilor .

He worked as a powder maker and member of the weavers' guild, in 1465 he became a 911 and from 1465 to 1673 he was a guild master.

Merz was a councilor from 1473 to 1476. During the Burgundian War in 1476 he led a St. Gallen troop contingent, which was under the command of the Zurich Hans Waldmann . 1479 he was Stadtammann unanimously to succeed Mayor and 1490 Ulrich Varnbiiler chosen that during the St. Galler war had fled from the Confederates. Leonhard Merz later prevented an escalation of the tense situation in St. Gallen during the uprising of February 10, 1491 (“nonsensical Thursday”), when conspirators planned to attack and dismiss the council.

Leonhard Merz was married. His son of the same name, Leonhard Merz, studied law at the University of Rostock and became a judge in Magdeburg . His brothers Hans and Augustin Merz also studied and obtained a doctorate.
